has been retaliating today. at least 130 rockets fired from gaza into israeli cities. about 50 of those rockets were intercepted by israel's homemade antimissile defense system, the iron dome, but one did get through. it hit the israeli town and killed three israeli citizens, and now israel is using that, of course, to threaten more attacks. the southern commander of the israeli army said that the assassination yesterday of ahmed jabbaarie, which kicked all this off, the militant leader, he says is just the beginning. meanwhile, israeli troops are gathering on the edge of gaza. tanks have been reported moving south. a ground invasion is possible. it's definitely not what israel wants, but israel's defense minister ehud barak said this morning that israel would do anything, and he repeated, anything at all, to stop the rockets to make israel's southern cities safe. martin fletcher, nbc news, tel aviv. >> martin, thanks so much. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with your weather channel forecast. good morning to you, bill. >> good morning. one more quiet day, then a stor

as the rain will be long gone. i-95, between washington, baltimore, trenton, new york city, even lower portions of the hudson valley and new england, the rain is moving in. this shield of light rain. nothing too intense with it but just enough that you will need the windshield wipers. a wider view shows it goes into the the adirondacks, new hampshire, vermont. the forecast is going to call for that front to kick off the east coast during the day today. temperatures will plummet as a warm, beautiful day yesterday. the cold air in the heart of the country will spill to the east coast. no big storms behind this. we're really dealing with temperatures that are chilly from minneapolis to denver. with sunshine, it will be pretty manageable. 40 in chicago, 55 in kansas city, not bad in texas. as i mentioned on the east coast, rain this morning and this afternoon looks okay. that's a look at your national forecast. now here's a look at the rain outside your window. cincinnati, ohio, brisk, cold this morning, 44 this afternoon. that's better than what you dealt with yesterday with the rain for

the storm is just south of cape cod, heavy snow set up over new jersey, new york city and up into connecticut. snowfall totals very impressive. manchester, new jersey, one of highest totals, nearly a foot. many areas of connecticut picked up between five to eight inches. and central park in new york city picked up between about four to five inches of snow, being the earliest ever that new york city has had four inches of snow heading into the winter season. and these wind gusts are still impressive. they've come down, lynn, over new york city and areas of new england, but cape cod? it's still howling up to 60-mile-per-hour gusts, so an impressive early-season nor'easter. >> bill, thanks so much. >>> well, president obama is back at the white house this morning where he will begin to work with congress on taxes, spending, and the national debt to avoid that so-called fiscal cliff. nbc's tracie potts is in washington with the latest on that. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: lynn, good morning. that big party in chicago over, the president now back here in washington dealing w

brunging the city's death toll to 43. homeland security secretary janet nah pop politan know has reaffirmed her commitment to be with those for the duration. now for a look at the weather here is nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. give me good news. >> that's depends where you are in the west. >> i want sunshine. >> go south. the northwest isn't pretty. rain and snow in many areas of washington state and oregon state. look at the radar. the green shows you where the rain is. the white is the snow and the cold air trying to hang tough. northern idaho and spokane dealing with snow. in spokane, you could end up with an inch or two. temperatures should warm up during the day. looks like we're just about done with it in areas near yakima. portland, looking at mostly just rain and scattered showers around seattle. as far as snow accumulations go, additional accumulations three to six. in spokane, you'll probably top out somewhere around a slushy two inches. as far as the forecast in northern california, the southern portion of the system dragging showers onshore. i-5

and in new york city. still snowing hard on long island into new england. many places in connecticut have nearly a foot of heavy, wet snow. it has been wind-driven. for us, reagan national, we had a little bit of flurry and sleet activity from about 10:00 last night until 1:00, 2:00 this morning. now all of that has pretty much ended. although we still have a few scattered sprinkles in prince george's county. now it's changed back to some sprinkles. a few of those scattered spri s sprinkles will be with us the next few hours. well above freezing, as we anticipated that the impact would be very small for us. it's just in the upper 30s to 40 all across northern virginia into maryland. a few isolated spots have dipped down to near freezing. should not have any travel problems here locally this morning. just a few flurries this morning. cloudy still around noontime. during the afternoon, ought to get some breaks in the clouds. i'll be back in ten minutes. danella is here with a look at our very early morning traffic. >> volume very, very light. not seeing any accidents right now. but seeing

park in new york city, almost 5 inches of snow is almost unheard of, wasser, mass., 5 inches, danbury, connecticut, 9. and one in new jersey with a foot of snow. the storm almost looks like a tropical storm. that's the center of it. south of nantucket. its anding over the interior sections. it's wrapping in some warmer air, changing over snow to rain in areas of long island. the temperatures have warmed up even at the upper levels of the storm. that will help things during the day today. the worst of it definitely on cape cod right now. look at the wind gusts. 59 on martha's vineyard, 55 on provincetown. cape cod, this is the worst of it for you. you're getting the rain and the pounding wind. w worcester, the snow with the leaves on the trees aren't doing so well. major highways fine. secondary roads slushy. during the afternoon hours the roads will clear up. most of us will head into the 40s. it will be a slushy, wet mess by later this afternoon. >> it will warm up and melt off. >>> president obama is back at the white house this morning where he will begin to work with congress on t
